Corneo Therapy

Corneotherapy, a term coined by Dr. Albert Kligman, is a skin care concept based on repairing the stratum corneum and therefore improving the function of the skin barrier. Topically applied substances influence the biochemistry in the horny layer of the skin and subsequent processes in deeper skin layers, which consequently have effects on the constitution of the horny layer, creating a cyclical effect that starts at the surface of the skin.

The basis of corneotherapy has three core concepts:

1.Prevention – for preventive corneotherapy, it is essential to avoid skin care products with harmful substances such as irritants and allergens, to select appropriate skin care ingredients, and to individually adapt skin care products to specific skin conditions.

2.Protection - an important result of professor Kligman’s studies is the finding that appropriate moisturizers and lipids will not only support the integrity of the horny layer but also support the regeneration of deeper skin layers. In addition, recovery of the skin barrier will promote protection against premature aging.

3.Individualized Care – components of corneotherapy include a precise analysis of the skin and an individually adapted skin care system based on that analysis. The result is a modular system with a combination of base creams and skin care agents that allow the user to customize their skin care.

What is the science behind this therapy?

The Dermaviduals line of products utilizes nanoparticles, liposomes, and DMS as ideal penetrating agents to selectively carry active substances into all types of skin. This serves to protect healthy skin and helps restore damaged skin to a natural balanced state.

Dermaviduals products with DMS are based on the Derma Membrane Structure of the skin. This means that the structure and composition of our products resembles the components of the natural skin barrier.

In the past decade, research studies of the corneocyte protective barrier have shown that these external cells are arranged in the form of bricks, and the lipids between those cells act as a mortar to maintain adhesion. Loss of these lipids allows trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) to occur, which causes skin cells to become dry and flaky. This can lead to damaged, unsightly skin, and may be seen in skin disorders such as eczema, neurodermatitis, acne, rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, and ichthyosis.

Dermaviduals products have been formulated as ideal agents for use in corneotherapy, to help correct abnormal corneocyte adhesion. Dermaviduals skin care products do not use standard oil in water (O/W), or water in oil (W/O) emulsions, but employ an advanced method that blends DMS, nanoparticles, and liposomes. These products contain ingredients that are obtained only from natural sources, such as soybean lecithin, ceramides from yeast, triglycerides from palm oil, and other substances from olives, shea butter, and avocado.

All Dermaviduals products are made without preservatives, emulsifiers, artificial dyes, perfuming agents, mineral oils, amines, or silicones.

Final Thought: Several studies have been done to show the efficacy of Dermaviduals products. Although many of these have been conducted by the manufacturer in Germany, studies have also been done by third parties in other countries. The partner company in Germany founded the Institute of Applied Corneotherapy (IAK) to develop cosmetic treatment procedures and study the efficacy of products.
