FEMALE SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION: FRIGIDITY
An Introduction to Flower Essences
By: Dr. Soha Bitar,
Lebanon, Oct 2008

Flower Essences were first made commercially by the English biochemist and homeopath, Dr. Edward Bach, in the 1920s.
However, the history of using dew as a medicinal substance goes back far into the past  - in both Arabic and European
medicines.  Nowadays there are hundreds of companies manufacturing Flower Essences, in all corners of the world, as a
quick trawl through Google will show.

How are Flower Essences made?

Most modern manufacturers follow the method laid down by Dr. Bach – the flowers are chosen and cut, and carefully
placed on the surface of a bowl full of spring water.  The bowl is then left in full sun for between 2 to 4 hours, the flowers
are strained out, and the remaining liquid is preserved with brandy. It sounds simple, and in some ways it is, but each
Essence is made with great care, delicacy and sensitivity.  After preserving, the Essence is investigated by a ‘sensitive’ who
has been trained to attune to the healing properties of plants and flowers over many years.  The information this ‘sensitive’
gathers is then added to folkloric knowledge about the plant, and information gathered by the person making the essence
as to the plants appearance – colour, shape, habit etc.  This situational information is part of what was known in the past as
the Doctrine of Signatures, which held that each plant or flower indicates it’s healing potential through interpretable signs
such as its appearance and way of growing.

How do Flower Essences differ from Herbalism and Aromatherapy/essential oils?

Making a Flower Essence mimics the natural process of dew formation – the flowers are not pressed or distilled, and nothing
is extracted from them, as in the manufacture of essential oils.  Herbalists often dry plants and flowers for use later in teas
and creams, whereas in making a Flower Essence the whole, live flower is used.
The idea behind this system is to capture something of the individual energy signature of a flower, transfer it into the
water, and use it as a healing substance.  There is a lot of research being done now into the possible ‘memory of water’.
The Japanese researcher Masaru Emoto has produced many fascinating books of his photographs of water crystals that have
been exposed to positive or negative messages.  His books are widely available, and are recommended reading for anyone
interested in the healing power of thought, or the properties of water.
